So after not writing this letter last year... and nearly being shot by many of you.. The Newsletter Thijs van den Berg is back by popular demand. Here are three stories; my experience of my second semester, Los Angeles and Asia.

My boyfriend, Ted and I will visit the Netherlands in the last weeks of May and will stay for one month and hope to see you again!

My experience of the second semester at the University of Hawaii at Hilo

GEOG 340 Class at Waipio Valley

There were four courses in the Fall 2011 semester. I took Geography (GEOG101) as an elective outside my major because of my knowledge in the subject of Geography was weak. I have learned the survey of the earth's physical environment, including distribution and associations between energy, climate, vegetation, and landforms. My favorite theme of this course was human interrelationships with the physical landscape.

Also I took GEOG340. It was like the GEOG101 course, but the basis was very different. GEOG340 was focused on urban planning for example, Land Use Planning relationship of geographic concepts to urban, regional, and environmental planning. There was an emphasis on examples from Hawaiʻi. Jeff Melrose is a great teacher. I will miss him.

The other class was Biostatistics Statistical analysis as applied to research in the Biological Sciences (BIOL 280). This class containrd theory and applications of statistics; experimental design; basic statistical concepts; hypothesis testing; parametric and non-parametric analysis.

I took the course, General Ecology, general ecological and evolutionary principles (BIOL 281) as a major requirement. At the beginning of this course, I thought my knowledge or ability in the subject was strong because I already knew the biology of animals from the Spring 2011 semester, but I was wrong. I wish I had taken the basic course, Introduction to Biology. The topics of this course are the relationship of plants and animals to their environments, processes regulating growth and evolution of populations, community structure, and ecosystem function. I am so happy I passed these courses.

At home, we had a busy time. Ted's nephew, Josh from Oregon stayed at our home in September for a few weeks. Jason Coombs also stayed at our home for a few weeks at the end of 2011. Our dog, Luna is fine.

Mijn ervaring bij het tweede semester van de Universiteit van Hilo

Hier waren vier cursussen van de herfst 2011. Ik nam de cursus, Aardrijkskunde (GEOG101) als keuzevak buiten mijn opleiding omdat mijn kennis van het onderwerp, Aardrijkskunde zwak was. Ik leerde het onderzoek van de fysieke van de aarde milieu, waaronder distributie en associaties tussen energie, klimaat, vegetatie, en landvormen. Mijn favoriete thema van deze cursus is Menselijke relaties met het fysieke landschap.

Ook heb ik de GEOG340. Het ziet eruit als GEOG101 natuurlijk, maar de basis is heel anders. GEOG340 is focus op de planning van bijvoorbeeld Ruimtelijke Ordening relatie van geografische concepten voor stedelijke, regionale en ruimtelijke ordening. Er was nadruk op voorbeelden uit Hawaii. Jeff Melrose is leuke leraar. Ik zal hem missen.

De andere klasse is Biostatistiek Statistische analyse zoals toegepast op het onderzoek in de Biologische Wetenschappen (BIOL 280). Deze klasse bevat Theorie en toepassingen van de statistiek, experimenteel ontwerp, elementaire statistische begrippen hypothese testen; parametrische en niet-parametrische analyse.

Ik nam de cursus, algemene ecologie Algemene ecologische en evolutionaire principes (BIOL 281) vanwege een van verplichte vakken. Aan het begin van deze cursus, mijn ervaring in het onderwerp was aardig, omdat ik al de biologie van dieren in het voorjaar van 2011 ken, maar het was misverstand. Ik wou dat ik de basiscursus, biologie Inleiding tot de biologie eerder zou beginnen. De onderwerpen van deze cursus zijn de relatie van planten en dieren aan hun omgeving, processen reguleren van groei en evolutie van de bevolking, de communautaire structuur, en ecosysteem functie. Ik ben zo blij ik alle cursussen heb gehaald.

Thuis hadden we drukke tijd. De nicht van Ted, Josh uit Oregon verbleef in ons huis in september voor enkele weken. Jason Coombs bleef bij ons thuis voor enkele weken aan het einde van 2011. Onze hond, Luna is prima.

City of the Angels

Los Angeles

For a long weekend in September, I went to Los Angeles to renew my passport. It was a lot of work preparing for the appointment with the Dutch Diplomatic Missions for example one of the required documents was a recent passport photo. The photo store nearby the office of Dutch consult specialized in the requirement photo size. My visit at the Dutch Consulate at Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles was emotional because it gave me home sickness. It was a hard time for me because my appointment destination was not just a one hour flight but 5 hour flight from my island. I am disappointed that the service for passport renewal from the Dutch consulate in Honolulu was stopped and also no American passports because of broken immigration system in the US for a foreign partner who has a relationship with an American. I hope it will change in the future. A dinner appointment with Patti reduced my stress. She is one of my family members and lives in Long Beach. It was a great time chatting with her. Another time, I visited the La Brea Tar Pits and one of Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings, Hollyhock in Hollywood, and also the In'N'Out Burger restaurant because they are the best hamburgers in the US! The La Brea Tar Pits is a must see attraction in LA because of its unique nature and tells a much longer history of the city!

Voor een lang weekend in september, was ik naar Los Angeles voor vernieuwen mijn paspoort. Het vereist grote papier werk voor een afspraak met de Nederlandse diplomatieke missies bijvoorbeeld een van de vereiste documenten, een recente pasfoto. Voor die foto, ik was bij de foto winkel vlakbij het kantoor van het Nederlandse diplomatieke missies dat is gespecialiseerd in het vereiste fotoformaat. Mijn bezoek aan het Nederlandse Consulaat in Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles was emotioneel vanwege de heimwee. Het was moeilijk tijd voor mij omdat de vlucht tijd naar mijn afspraak bestemming niet een uur lang maar 5 uren lang duurt. Het is ver van mijn eiland. Ik ben teleurgesteld dat de service voor vernieuwen het Nederlandse paspoort in Honolulu is gestopt en ook geen Amerikaans paspoort vanwege het gebrek in de immigratie systeem in de VS voor buitenlandse partner, die er een relatie heeft met de Amerikaans. Ik hoop dat het binnenkort in de toekomst verandert. Gelukkig heeft een diner afspraak met Patti mij beter gevoelenis gegeven. Ze is een van mijn familieleden en woont in Long Beach. Het was geweldige tijd om te spreken met haar. De volgende dag heb ik La Brea Tar Pits en een van Frank Lloyd Wright Gebouwen, Hollyhock in Hollywood, In'N'Out Burger restaurant bezocht vanwege de beste hamburger in de VS! Bezoek aan La Brea Tar Pits is de moeite waard in LA vanwege de unieke natuur en die attractie vertelt langere geschiedenis dan de stad zelf!

My unforgettable experience of 2011 was visiting Asia

Angkor Wat

In July, after long travel from Polynesia (Hawaii) to Asia, we really enjoyed the good services of Korea Airlines and also the stop over destination, Seoul Incheon and arrived late at Chiang Mai airport, Thailand, the only Southeast Asian country never to be colonized by a European power and also never experienced significant activity by Christian missionaries.

Chiang Mai is a colorful town that was built within the four bastions on each corner in the dense northern regions of Thailand. For one week in July, we stayed at the Siripanna Villa Resort & Spa outside the historic center for a medical vacation. While Ted had appointments with his dentist at the Asia Fortune Dental Hospital, I swam in the outdoor swimming pool, relaxed and enjoyed the Lanna architecture that is only found in Northern Thailand.

We entered through one of the five restored gates to the old city and explored its quiet lanes, lined with traditional shop fronts and old Thai-style teak houses. While we had lunch, we enjoyed the sport of Thailand, Thai kickboxing across from our restaurant. I realized that local involvement and participation in cultural conservation is high. Our friends from Hawaii lived in Chiang Mai for many years gave us tips. We did it! One of the tips was getting a blind massage at Sripoom Soi 1 . It is the best massage in the world.

Daily, we took a tuk-tuk ride to the historic center of Chiang Mai but for day trips out of town, we rented a guide (taxi chauffeur) exploring the "rain forest and stunning karst landscape scenery.” The lifestyles of many urban people are western, but people in rural areas still live simply. For example, away from the immediate area of Chiang Mai town there still remains vast areas of primary rain forest, and draped between stunning karst-limestone scenery. We visited one of many elephant training centers in Pai in Mae Hong Son province that allow tourists to sit directly on the elephant without seats. Mae Hong Son Province is in Northern Thailand on the border of Burma. In other provinces such as Chiang Mai sitting on elephants without the chair is forbidden due to safety reasons. Our interpreter from the Netherlands, Maloush Kohler worked there as a volunteer. The world is so small ! The elephant ride was an unforgettable experience but also petting baby tigers and an adult tiger at the Tiger Kingdom as well.

There are 30,000 Buddhist temples in Thailand. One of them is the gilded chedi of Doi Suthep with a height of 1,100 meters (3,600 feet), in the surrounding mountain of Chiang Mai, stands at the top of 290 steps guarded by carved seven-headed mythical snakes. We enjoyed the view from this temple site looking out to the city.

Nearby Doi Suthep, we visited one of the Hill Tribe villages where ethnic groups live. They are known for their hospitality. Despite their smiles, their lives have not usually been easy. Many came to Thailand to escape persecution in Myanmar. For the second week in Asia, we took Bangkok Airways via Bangkok to the neighbor country, Cambodia.

Because of the film Lara Croft, Angkor is again famous for tourists. The Cambodian temple complex, where Croft must retrieve half of the triangular MacGuffin, is at Siem Reap in Cambodia, where she arrived, with game-style ease, onto Phnom Bakheng, a hill topped by a Hindu temple (though the site later became a Buddhist centre. Now, two million visitors visit a year, the Disneyland of Buddha temples, Angkor.

We stayed at the Angkor Tara hotel for one week because we like slow traveling and want to connect with the local people and also wanted time to explore all the temples. The huge scale of the Angkor area, which sometimes requires a 20-minute-plus drives between temples, is truly astounding. Our hotel is at the gateway city of Siem Reap, surrounded by “large, gaudy hotels” . It is in the middle between an adventure playground, Angkor and the center of Siem Reap.

Because Angkor is a holy temple, I saw often the monks surrounding the temples and the Cambodian community visiting here as spectators. Existing on the periphery of the sites are local crafts markets. Bayon is my favorite temple and Banteay Sre Temple is my favorite architecture.

I couldn't find specialized street food, such as fried insects, deep fried grubs, crunchy cicadas in the stalls of the night markets but I enjoyed the atmosphere because of the square of boutique restaurants and "chic" style in the city center of Siem Reap. There is a shop where people with disabilities work. The deaf people painted small pictures. Others make handicrafts on wood. I bought a nice silk shirt and also a painting that deaf people made because I support deaf friendly companies.

I believe that Angkor is arguably the most fascinating place in the world. In the evening, we departed from Siem Reap via Seoul to Hawaii. Because the weather in Seoul was bad, we decided to relax at Incheon Airport Transit Hotel for few hours before we took the Korean Airline back to Hawaii.

When we got home, we missed the inspiring culture, beautiful nature, food, and local customs.

Mijn onvergetelijke ervaring van 2011 is een bezoek aan Azië

In juli, na een lange reis van Polynesië (Hawaii) naar Azië, hebben we echt genoten van de goede service van Korea Airlines en ook het stop over bestemming, Seoul Incheon en kwam de laatste tijd op de luchthaven Chiang Mai, Thailand dat het enige Zuidoost-Aziatische land nooit te zijn gekoloniseerd door een Europese macht ook nooit sprake van een belangrijke activiteit door christelijke missionarissen.

Chiang Mai is de kleurrijke stad die door de vier bastions op elke hoek te bouwen in de dichte noordelijke regio's van Thailand. Voor een week in juli, we verbleven in het Siripanna Villa Resort & Spa buiten het historische centrum voor medische vakantie. Toen Ted afspraak had met zijn tandarts van Azië Fortune Dental Hospital, zwom ik op het buitenzwembad en ontspannen en genieten van het Lanna-architectuur die alleen te vinden is in Noord-Thailand.

We gingen door een van de vijf gerestaureerde poorten van de oude stad en verkend zijn rustige straatjes, omzoomd met traditionele winkelpuien en oude Thaise stijl teak huizen. Wanneer we had een lunch, we zagen de sport van Thailand, Thai kickboksen tegenover ons restaurant. Ik merk "lokale betrokkenheid en deelname aan culturele conservering is hoog. Onze vrienden uit Hawaï hebben in Chiang Mai gewoond en gaf ons tips. Het was gelukt! Een van de tips was blind massage in Sripoom Soi 1. De blinde mensen werken als masseur in de blind massage. Het is mijn beste massage in wereld.

Dagelijks hebben we een tuk-tuk rit naar het historische centrum van Chiang Mai, maar voor een dagje buiten de stad, huurden we de gids (taxi chauffeur) het verkennen van het "regenwoud en een prachtig karst landschap." De levensstijl van vele stedelijke zijn westerned, maar de mensen op het platteland wonen nog eenvoudig. Bijvoorbeeld, ver weg van de drukke stad, Chiang Mai zijn er nog steeds grote delen van de primaire regenwoud en gedrapeerd tussen de prachtige karst-kalksteen landschap. We bezochten een van de vele olifanten training kampen in Pai in de provincie Mae Hong Son die het mogelijk maken om toeristen op de olifant zitten zonder de stoelen. Mae Hong Son provincie is in Noord-Thailand met de grens van Birma. In andere provences zoals Chiang Mai zitten zonder dat de stoel niet toegestaan vanwege de veiligheid. Onze tolk uit Nederland, Maloush Kohler werkte daar als vrijwilliger. De wereld is zo klein! Olifant rijden is onvergetelijk ervaring, maar ook aaien tijgers en volwassen tijger in de Tiger Koninkrijk.

In de omgeving Doi Suthep, bezochten we een van de Hill Tribes dorpen waar etnische groepen die leven. Ze staan bekend om hun gastvrijheid. Ondanks hun glimlach, hun leven hebben meestal niet gemakkelijk geweest. Velen kwamen Thailand aan vervolging te ontsnappen in Myanmar.

Voor de tweede week in Azië, namen we de Bangkok Airways via Bangkok naar het buurland, Cambodja.

Door de film Lara Croft, Angkor is weer bekend voor toeristen. De Cambodjaanse tempel complex, waar Croft moet de helft van de driehoekige MacGuffin op te halen, is in Siem Reap in Cambodja, waar ze komt, met een game-stijl gemak, op Phnom Bakheng, een heuvel met bovenop een hindoe-tempel (hoewel de site werd later een boeddhistisch centrum. Nu, twee miljoen bezoekers een bezoek aan een jaar is het Disneyland van Boeddha tempels, Angkor.

We verbleven in het Angkor Tara hotel voor een week, omdat we rustiger willen verkennen alle tempels maar ook de Cambodians mensen. De enorme omvang van de Angkor gebied vereist soms 20-minuten of meer vervoer tussen de tempels, is werkelijk verbazingwekkend. Ons hotel ligt aan de hoofdstraat van Reap die is omgeven door de "grote, protserige hotels". Het is midden tussen een avontuurlijke speeltuin, Angkor en het centrum van Siem Reap.

Omdat Angkor een heilige tempel is, zag ik vaak de monniken rond de tempels en de Cambodjaanse gemeenschap hier is op zijn best een toeschouwer, die op de rand van de sites met lokale ambachten markten. Bayon is mijn favoriete tempel en mijn favoriete design is Banteay Sre Tempel.

Ik kan het niet gespecialiseerde straatvoedsel vinden, zoals gefrituurde insecten, gefrituurd en knapperige larven krekels bij de kraampjes in de nacht markten, maar ik genoot van de sfeer door het boutique restaurants en "chic" stijl in het centrum van Siem Reap. Er is een winkel waar de mensen met de handicap werken. De dove mensen schilderen de afbeeldingen van Angkor tempels. Anderen maken handwerk op de hout. Ik kocht mooie kort T-shirt, maar ook het schilderij dat dove mensen gemaakt, omdat ik graag doof vriendelijke bedrijven ondersteun.

Ik geloof dat Angkor is het meest fascinerende plaats ter wereld. Op laatste avond vertrokken we met de vliegtuig uit Siem Reap via Seoul naar Hawaï. Omdat het weer in Seoul slecht was, hebben we besloten om op Incheon Airport Transit Hotel ontspannen voor enkele uren voor het vlucht reis met de Korean Airlines terug naar Hawaii (10 uren).

Toen we thuis waren, missen we de inspirerende cultuur, prachtige natuur, voedsel en Aziatisch mensen.
